Modern Multi-Generational Home

Willow Glen, CA

The contemporary aesthetic of the new home was reflected in the landscape with bold lines and simple forms. Board-form concrete and Corten steel were used for vertical surfaces and provide interesting, contrasting colors and textures. The landscape is lush green with flowering species throughout the year while maintaining a relatively low water demand. The owner's appreciation of the Sierra Nevada landscape was reflected in the landscape with plant species that give a playful nod to the plant communities enjoyed in the mountains.

The existing landform and trees of the property provided an opportunity to develop vastly different landscapes across the site that are tied together with common use of materials and plant species. The front yard is dominated by redwood and oak trees on a slope that helps screen the road from the house and provides privacy. Small spaces in the front yard take advantage of sun exposure as well as strong indoor-outdoor relationships. The route from the street through the front yard to the front door leads visitors up a stepped path through the redwood trees with board-form walls providing screening and soil retention.
